January 19, 2007The Council SpeaksThe Watcher's Council results are in. The winning Council post was Rhymes With Right's MLK Day--A Singular Holiday with yours truly's The Beauty of Fairness ekeing out a narrow second place. The winning non-Council post was Small Wars Journal's A Framework for Thinking About Iraq Strategy followed by Confederate Yankee's Discrediting Jamil's Sources. This was my last week on the Council, so if you know a good blogger who is looking for greater exposure, head over to the Watcher's place and drop him a line. January 10, 2007NominationsThis week's Watcher's Council nominations are up. Borrowing a page from Dave Shuler, this week's Council entries include: Dave Shuler discussing the growing environmental disaster in China due to their reliance on coal, an important and underappreciated issue that is already affecting the U.S. as pollution travels across the Pacific, and an issue that will become more important as the discussion about global warming continues. American Future takes on the rather silly meme that argues that if one was wrong about the Iraq War, one's opinion should never again be heeded. Eternity Road has an interesting essay about the history of warfare and what it implies about our current conflict. Done With Mirrors asks an excellent question: why do we still have a CIA? As I've written about this myself, I particularly enjoyed reading this well-researched piece. The Colossus of Rhodey talks about the continued dominance of the American Left on university campuses, an issue I'm quite curious about, as I'm 15 years removed from college and, while certainly the student body where I went to school tilted well to the left, I was well-known on campus as a righty and I never faced any trouble with any of my instructors. Rhymes With Right takes a look at Mitt Romney's budding presidential campaign, another issue of some interest to me given my disdain for the two presumptive leading Republican candidates, McCain and Giuliani. SoccerDad takes a look at the troubles of Iraqi soccer today and compares them to life under Uday. Rightwing Nuthouse effectively (and humorously) punctures the ravings of Dennis Prager and Rep. Virgil Goode over the horrors of a Muslim Congressman taking a ceremonial oath on a copy of the Koran. Joshuapundit takes a look at the state of Islamic jurisprudence with 'You're the Qadi,' a multiple choice exam examining some decisions in Islamic courts. My only quarrel with this kind of this is that it's always tough to know how representative such selections are. The Education Wonks ask how to deal with an unusual disciplinary situation, highlighting some of the strange problems modern educators have to address. The Sundries Shack fisks a Howard Fineman column that asks what Americans want in a President, noting that the answer (as it usually is when pundits ask such questions) is amazingly similar to what Howard Fineman would like in a President. There were some very good articles among this week's selection. I was particularly partial to Sneaking Suspicion's 'At Risk of Repetition' and The Glittering Eye's 'The house always wins,' but just about every article in this week's list was an interesting read.
