OK, Maybe a Little Remorse

Wow. I'm not sure what else to say in response to the news the Senate Republicans have elected Trent Lott as Minority Whip, the #2 position among Senate Republicans. The man who stands as a symbol of everything that's wrong with the Republican Party is now back in power. Yes, he's the #2 man, but that's cold comfort, particularly as the #1 man, Mitch McConnell, isn't a great face for the party either.

Voting is a terribly blunt instrument. You can try to send a message with your vote, but it's uncertain at best whether or not that message will be the one received. Certainly in this case, the Republicans have demonstrated that they completely missed the message of the voters last Tuesday. On the plus side, such as it is, I suppose it's much easier for me to justify voting against Republicans now, as they've demonstrated convincingly their utter disinterest in listening to their constituents.

Over at Obsidian Wings, hilzoy has some choice comments by Strom Thurmond, the man Lott went down in flames over four years ago. (Does the blogosphere have to take his head off their mantle, now?) As for me, I'm pretty much speechless. I think the competition for the title of 'the stupid party' is now over.
