« History Repeats | Main | Congratulations » November 13, 2006Moving Too FastI see that the Democrats are now ready to start pulling U.S. forces out of Iraq. While I suppose this is no surprise, I'm disappointed to see it. The Democrats have rightly pointed out that Republicans acted without gathering all appropriate data, leading to problems like Iraq. Yet now they're poised to do precisely the same thing. With all due respect to the Democratic leadership, I'd be impressed to learn that this move was being made on the basis of extensive discussion with military and political leaders from the U.S. and Iraq. I suspect instead that the Democrats have pretty much always wanted to be out of Iraq and want to get the question of Iraq off the table. I have no doubt that they're sincere in their belief that getting out of Iraq is the best course of action available to us, but sincerity is a lot less important to me than whether or not getting out is the right thing to do. And I am not convinced the Democrats have made that determination yet. It is not sufficient to demonstrate that it was a bad idea to go into Iraq in the first place. While I am of that belief myself, the fact remains that we are there now, and we have to move forward based on where we are, not where we wish we were. We therefore need to ask the right questions about what will happen if we stay or leave Iraq, and make our decision based on that. I'm not interested in asking those questions right now. I'm more interested in seeing some evidence from the Democrats that they've asked those questions. Whether we stay the course, change course, or simply evacuate Iraq, we will incur certain gains and losses. An honest discussion of Iraq needs to address those issues openly and clearly. A Democratic Congress needs to hold hearings that delve into those questions thoroughly and honestly and lay out all of the effects, both positive and negative, that can reasonably be expected to result from each policy. Once Congress is armed with that information, they can make a determination on which direction they want to go in with the facts solidly in hand, and with plans for how to take advantage of the gains and mitigate the costs of their preferred policy. Otherwise, as far as I'm concerned, they're no more serious about success than the Republicans. That may be the case, of course. The Democrats may prefer to just get back to domestic policies and view Iraq as a distraction from that. But I don't believe that. (Yes, there may be specific Democrats who do think that way, but I have a bit more faith in the party as a whole. Not a lot, but a little.) I think the Democrats want to do the right thing. But I think that pulling out of Iraq without taking the time to think through the consequences is terribly irresponsible. Congress is a deliberative body. The Republicans weren't much on deliberating; they just worked to pass what they wanted. If the Democrats could step up and return to deliberation, it would be a huge step in the right direction. All sounds like the Dem's agenda. Posted by: anilp I question that the democratic leadership believes that getting out of Iraq is the best course of action open to us. I think that the democratic leadership is beholden to leftists who believe that it is more important to diminish US influence abroad. Consider that they work both sides of the Vietnam analogy. On the "negative" side are the journalists who can find nothing at all good to say about US intervention abroad, even when it furthers the cause of human rights and self-determination. On the "positive" side are the political operatives who trot out war heroes whose only real purpose is to demonize the war under a fair face. In other words, heads I win, tails you lose. Democracies of individuals in the world are in retreat, social democracies of groups and dictatorships are ascendant. In the current conflict, leftists are united with the Islamists in their hatred for individual rights. Posted by: pdq332 Amazing. They seem intent on using the quickest, most clumsy parliamentary maneuver to begin the bailout immediately, thereby butting into the chain of command so that they themselves will preside over the inevitably messy consequences. Leave it to the dems to snatch a Democratic failed war from the jaws of a Republican failed war. Posted by: ArtD0dger Andrew: the NYT quotes Levin and Biden, who have presumably been being briefed by military people all along, as part of their committee duties. Both have come up with plans before the election (different plans, but plans nonetheless; I don't much care for Biden's, but Reed/Levin is decent), and while I can't imagine they wouldn't consult the military on this again, it's also not as though the whole situation, or the military's take on it, is completely new to them. (If it were, then given that they are the heads of the Senate Armed Services and Foreign Affairs committees, they would have to have been completely failing to do their jobs.)
