Opportunity Knocks

Tom Delay's exit from Congress has created an unusual opportunity in Texas: a House seat that could go to a third party candidate. Because Delay is still the candidate on the ballot, the Democrat and the Libertarian are facing off against a Republican write-in candidate. The Libertarian, Bob Smither, faces an uphill race still, but this is the best shot a third party candidate (other than Bernie Sanders, Congress' resident socialist) has had in quite some time. And if you're interested in seeing someone other than the same old Democrats and Republicans in office, you can help out. If he's to have a hope, Smither will need money and publicity, two things the blogosphere can provide. Check out the candidate's web site (yes, it needs work), give him a few dollars if you can spare them, blog about him if you have a blog, and if you live in his district, you can even volunteer to work for his campaign. Let's shake Congress up this November.

I think you should include Ron Paul (Libertarian/RINO) on that list.

Sure, he caucases with Republicans, but his vote against the resolution for the Iraq war should have dispelled any notion that he's anything but a Libertarian.

Additionally, I really don't see Bob Smither standing a chance in the original TX-22 that elected Delay. These folks are religious conservatives and a Libertarian candidate is not at all what they want. Add in the area of Clear Lake (around NASA) and you pick up not only a lot of democrats, but also a lot of independant voters.
