The Grim Advance of Time
One sign I've seen of my getting older has been listening to the radio and hearing familiar songs that have been remade by more modern artists, a rather disturbing experience, particularly when they butcher a song I liked when I was younger. Some examples include Bryan Adams "Heaven" by DJ Sammy (when you're made nostalgic for Bryan Adams, you know things are bad), Talk Talk's "It's My Life" by No Doubt (this wasn't horrible, but the original was far superior), Don Henley's "Boys of Summer" by The Ataris and by DJ Sammy (The Ataris is livable, DJ Sammy makes me want to vomit), Genesis' "Land of Confusion" by Disturbed (I can take it or leave it), Berlin's "Take My Breath Away" by Jessica Simpson (Simpson does her best, but her voice can't compare with Terri Nunn's), The Cure's "Lovesong" by 311 (some things are just wrong, this is one of them), Roxette's "Listen to your Heart" by D.H.T. (I had to change the station), Madonna's "Papa Don't Preach" by Kelly Osbourne (given her parentage, an interesting choice of songs) and Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time" by INOJ (meh). And I know there's lots more out there to remind me of my misspent youth, when the music scene burned brightest (yes, I like 80s music...so?).
But nothing could have prepared me for this.

Celine covering AC/DC? It's just so wrong. Can the fall of Western Civilization be far behind? Actually, when you're as old as I am and have lived through a series of forgettable remakes of 60s and 70s tunes, you learn to adjust. Does the remake ever match the original? (Tina Turner's "Proud Mary"?) IMO, Henley's "Boys of Summer" was so good, especially when compared to the recent remake.
Along the same lines, I've wondered how subsequent generations will remake hip-hop, which has already "sampled" (stolen) from previous artists. How exactly will that work?

Oh. My. God.
I was just in Vegas and, thankfully, both my wife and I hate Celine Dion with a red hot burning passion, I can't imagine what would have happened had we been there with friends and had to see the show.
ckreiz- Does the remake ever match the original?
I heard Eddie Vedder do a great rendition of Tom Petty's "I won't back down" on a bootleg that I thought was better. He also did a good cover version of a Beatle's song on the I am Sam soundtrack (which is full of them). Run DMC did a great cover of Walk this Way (though Aerosmith did participate in the production).

Does the remake ever match the original
IMHO, Johnny Cash's cover of NIN's Hurt surpasses the original.
Ditto Sinéad O'Connor's version of Nothing Compares 2 U, written by Prince and first performed by The Family in 1985.

That No Doubt cover is in fact horrible.
Here is the gorgeous original video.

I'm not that much younger than you are, and I'm beginning to feel old for the same reason.
I don't think Celine's career is ever coming back after that. That was just sick and wrong.
