Oscarblogging 2006 II

I liked the technique proposed for keeping Oscar speeches short, although to be honest the speeches can be a good part of the evening. I'd rather see them trim some other segments, like most of the songs, for one.

Ben Stiller is a very strange man, but that was a cute intro, and I don't think he let it drag on too long. Visual effects, a tough category this year. And, I actually saw some of these films, which is cool. It will probably go to the one I didn't see. Nope, King Kong takes the prize, not surprising given how much screen time Kong got. Kudos to the winners for thanking Andy Serkis. I always feel for the multiple winners, since whoever goes first inevitably takes up the time allotted for speechmaking. Or maybe they agreed to let him speak for all of them, since I didn't hear any personal thank-yous.

Ugh, best animated feature. A ghetto category, as evidenced by the nominees. When you have to nominate those films for an Oscar, maybe it's time to rethink the category. But they won't do that, because they don't dare see a truly great animated film get real recognition. Nice ties on the winners, too...genuine class. And something tells me that while 'we' may have made the movie together, those Oscars are staying in the hands of tonight's winners.

Ack, singing. Occasionally I do enjoy it, but given that Oscar only nominate three songs for this category, it should be clear it was a shallow pool this year. Oh, God, she's got the audience clapping. Well, at least we only have to deal with two more songs.
