« The Cos in Colorado Springs | Main | Playoffs 2003 » September 27, 2003Clark's TrialIt's been a tough week for Wes Clark since he announced his candidacy for President. Despite having had months to come up with positions, Clark clearly was ill-prepared for the scrutiny that comes with being a candidate, and it hurt him. But that isn't his real problem. Clark was a savior candidate, and that's at best a mixed blessing. Nobody knew any of his positions coming in, which means every Democrat looking for someone who could win assumed that Clark's positions were in tune with their own. Now that he's actually declared and has started to explain where he truly stands on a number of issues, there are a number of very disappointed people wondering what happening to the Wes Clark they were expecting. This has led to an understandable backlash. Fortunately for Clark, it won't last long. Clark's no fool, and he is certainly willing to work, so he'll polish up pretty quick. And once Democrats realize what Clark does and does not stand for, he'll rebound and have a fair shot at the nomination. But that presumes he doesn't lose his temper and do something foolish in the interim. The next month will be one of the toughest Clark faces. How he responds to it will be valuable instruction for what type of president he could make.Posted at September 27, 2003 09:44 PM
