« Do You Believe In Miracles? | Main | Game One » October 23, 2004The Real Mission BeginsIt was great beating the Yankees, and doing it in such a stunning fashion was even better. But the Red Sox have won the ALCS before. What's missing from the mantlepiece is a World Series trophy. Now they're there for the first time in 18 years, and many people still want to talk about the ALCS. But if the Sox don't beat the Cardinals, the ALCS won't really have mattered much. St. Louis is a very good team. They won 105 games in the regular season, and they offer an impressive combination of offense and defense. The Red Sox pitching is probably superior, and their offense stacks up well, but St. Louis' defense and their speed could give Boston a lot of problems. Boston has the home field advantage and the better starting pitchers, two elements that are normally sufficient to give a team a victory in the postseason, but there are no guarantees in the postseason, especially against as talented a team as the Cardinals. It's no time to get complacent. If the Sox get good pitching from Schilling and Martinez, Red Sox in six. If not, Cardinals in seven. Posted at October 23, 2004 05:36 AM
Trackback PingsTrackBack URL for this entry: CommentsI am tired of hearign about it has been 18 years. Blah, blah, blah. As A Cubs fan, 18 years would be wonderful. At least I could have seen them there as opposed to remembrances of before I was born. I agree with you on the matchup though. Boston does have the best starting pitching, but I haven' been real impressed with Pedro. I think that if St Louis can get to him, the cardinals will win in 5. Posted by: Scott at October 23, 2004 09:35 AM Before you get down on Pedro too much, remember two things: 1) The Yankees have seen Pedro about 3.65 million times over the last few years. They know his pitches, and his arm angles. 2) Pedro hit 97 MPH on one of his last pitches in game 7. He hasn't hit 97 MPH in the last 3 years. I think he is going to look pretty good against St. Louis. As long as he can get through the first inning. Posted by: Enrak at October 23, 2004 03:20 PM I have been down on Pedro since he left the NL. Not because he isn't still an awesome pitcher, but because he has a tendency to throw at batters. In the NL, that is fine because they will throw at you. In the AL, he doesn't hit most of the time and if someone charges, his team rushes out and he ends up not doing any fighting.
