« Not Good | Main | More Fair and Balanced » September 03, 2004Let the Mudwrestling BeginI'm sure that we'll hear strenuous objections from all the lefty bloggers who were outraged over the Swiftvets ads to Susan Estrich's call for the Democrats to slime Republicans. After all, I'm sure that Drum, Yglesias, Farber, Willis, and Marshall are all upright people who wouldn't countenance such a thing after they strenuously objected to what they perceived as Republican smear attacks by the Swiftvets. Just in case, though, I won't be holding my breath waiting for the cries of outrage on the left side of the aisle. As for me, I wish the Democrats the best of luck with this tactic. I trust the voters to sort the slime from the facts, just as I think happened with the Swiftvets. (I should probably write a closeout on them; for now, suffice to say I think it's clear that their accusations were a mixed bag.) Would I prefer an election on the issues? Sure, but I'm not aware of a presidential election yet that revolved around issues, so why should 2004 be any different? Let each side do its worst, and see what the electorate thinks come November 2. It won't be pretty, but politics rarely is, and how each side reacts to the attacks will tell us quite a bit about the respective campaigns and prospective administrations. Update: Bonehead play of the day to yours truly for failing to include the link to Estrich's suggested talking points. Fixed now. Posted at September 3, 2004 09:40 PM
Trackback PingsTrackBack URL for this entry: CommentsYou must be joking... Susan calls for simply doing less yhan half of what the repugs have done so far, and (the big difference) is that she advocates using the truth, as opposed to the BS that republican'ts keep spewing (see: most of the RNC convention, like that BS Ahhnold tried to pass off as history). What's a matter, can dish it but can't take it? Posted by: Greg at September 5, 2004 10:48 AM Hmmm, your method of argument is to call the Republicans names, and my post clearly states that I have no problem with the Democrats bringing up whatever slime they choose. Forgive me if I can't take you seriously. Posted by: Andrew at September 5, 2004 11:17 AM Which smears are you up in arms about, exactly? Posted by: scarshapedstar at September 5, 2004 12:06 PM No fair! If you're gonna lump all my friends together, in high sarcasm, as "upright people who wouldn't countenance such a thing [as Dems sliming Republicans] after they strenuously objected to what they perceived [sic] as Republican smear attacks by the Swiftvets" you darn well should include me. Otherwise I'll feel dejected, unread, and lonely - and trust me, that would Not Be A Good Thing. Posted by: tristero at September 5, 2004 02:07 PM scarshapedstar, Again, I'm not 'up in arms.' While I'd prefer that both campaigns spend more time on the issues and less time on what happened 35 years ago, at this point I figure we're better off letting the people decide based on what they hear. So if both sides want to spend the next twelve weeks slinging mud, I wish them both luck, and we'll see what happens. I'm not emotionally involved. ;) tristero, Sorry, I was just looking to twist the tail of some of the more prominent lefty bloggers. I certainly didn't mean to ignore you. ;) Posted by: Andrew at September 5, 2004 02:56 PM ... how each side reacts to the attacks will tell us quite a bit about the respective campaigns and prospective administrations. Doesn't it also tells us a little something about the voting public? To wit: for all the screeching about negative campaigning, the fact is, slime-slinging works -- and always has. Posted by: Philboid Studge at September 6, 2004 10:24 AM What are you talking about? She says true events and accurate portrayal. Not lies and innuendo. Can you read or understand anything? Do you know the difference? Sheesh get a brain and use it moron. My God you aren't very intelligent if you don't know the difference. Posted by: funfunfun at September 6, 2004 03:03 PM Hmmm, I'm not going to delete your comment, so the evidence does suggest that I could be smarter. But what you seem to be missing is that there is no evidence that the Swiftvets are using lies and innuendo, either, yet somehow, when the Swiftvets raise questions, they're lying scum, and when Estrich does so, she's just doing her patriotic duty. It's a valuable illustration of partisan blinders, but little more than that. Posted by: Andrew at September 6, 2004 04:35 PM Mud Wresting? I'm for it! First matchup, Estrich vs. Coulter. Perhaps not fair, as Estrich appears to have the weight advantage, although I think Coulter has the nod for height and reach -- oh wait, that'd be an advantage for boxing. Odds on Estrich.
