Self-Defense Time

After all the talk about Abu Ghraib and beheadings, we get a reminder that this is a global war, and like all wars, the enemy isn't going to simply sit back and cede us the initiative. Worse, unless the government has significantly better intelligence than it has let on, stopping the expected attack will depend more on good luck and the actions of our citizens than on anything the government can do. Although we may rest assured that, should there be a successful attack, the Democrats and the media will assure us all that it would have been prevented if Kerry was President.

Sadly, life isn't that simple. The government should (and presumably will) increase security measures at airports and around certain high-priority targets, but smart terrorists will come after a target we're not expecting. If they've made it into the country already, there are far too many targets meeting that description for us to protect without paralyzing ourselves.

That means that we can't depend on the government to protect us. Every American would do well to keep their eyes and ears open until this situation is resolved, particularly if they live in a major city. The odds are better than even that if this attack is real, it will be stopped by an alert civilian rather than a government employee.

This reminds me of my childhood. Getting on the school bus in the morning meant checking under the seat for bombs, then checking the shelf above the seat for bombs, and then finally sitting down to ride off to school.

That's a depressing thought, but unfortunately it may become the mentality we need to have in the U.S. as well.

It's well-nigh impossible to be successful on this in a reactive posture. So the more successful we are hunting them down overseas the better. Seems pretty simple from here, but I never drank the DNC's kool-aid.

The government is not responsible for "protecting" me. Insure domestic tranquility and provide for the common defence are not the same as protect. I am responsible for my own protection. Expecting the state to protect me is the nanny-state on testosterone.
