« Freedom and Equality | Main | For the Betterment of Your Paper » February 26, 2004The Wonder of CertaintyKevin Holtsberry is using the gay marriage brouhaha to explain why he is not a libertarian. While I don't agree with Kevin's arguments, he does a good job of laying out why he feels the way he does about the proposed federal marriage amendment and I believe he makes some fair points that deserve reasoned answers. But several of his commenters prefer to answer him with insults regarding his intelligence rather than with arguments regarding the merits of his position. Michele Catalano is experiencing a similar backlash after her excellent post explaining why she feels it important for her to vote for President Bush. As I noted a few days ago, there are an amazing number of people out there who already know the answers to everything. They can therefore attack their enemies with impunity, because they live secure in the knowledge that they're right. Yet I often wonder if they ever notice that they seem to fail to ever convince those who don't believe the way they do that they're wrong? Or does their moral certitude immunize them against such questions? Posted at February 26, 2004 10:06 AM
