In brief, I consider it absolutely wrong that the government can step in and tell us that it can decide what fraction of the income we earn through our own hard work we get to keep. While there is a difference between that and communism, it is only a difference of scale. Now Tegen highlights another grim problem with our system of taxation: you're guilty unless proven innocent. A comic book store owner is out thousands of dollars even if she wins the case, all because the IRS got bored one day and decided to check out her store and make a number of arbitrary decisions about her work. It's time we turned off the IRS and shifted to a fair method of funding our government. If that means we can't spend as much on the 90% of the Federal government that's not necessary, we'll just have to learn to live with it. Hat tip: Jim Henley. Posted at December 12, 2003 05:25 AM

Government has a better claim on a sales tax, because certain government measures (i.e. a legal framework) are necessary for capitalism to work. Furthermore, if you're hard core enough, you can avoid a sales tax (though that would be pretty damn hard core), and a sales tax wouldn't require the scads of auditors and ridiculous double/triple standards the IRS uses.
